VOC archives included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register

On 9 March 2004, the Director General of UNESCO signed the certificate testifying that the Archives of the Dutch East India Company (VOC archives) have been included in the "Memory of the World" Register.

"The inclusion of this documentary heritage in the MOW Register reflects its exceptional value and calls for it to be protected for the benefit of all humanity. It also offers an excellent opportunity for drawing attention to the importance of the collective memory and the need to safeguard it and to enable as many people as possible to have access to it."

The VOC archives were recommended on the International Advisory Committee of the "Memory of the World" Programme at its sixth meeting held in Gdansk, Republic of Poland, from 28 to 30 August 2003.
